Fruit Dip is a creamy, easy dessert dip made with sour cream, honey, and vanilla instead of Cool Whip or marshmallow cream. It takes about 5 minutes, no cooking required, and makes a tangy, lightly sweet dip for strawberries, melon, apples, fruit skewers, or a summer fruit platter. If you're looking for a healthy-ish fruit dip recipe, this is it.

A platter of colorful fresh fruit, strawberries, cherries, pineapple, grapes, melon, and a honey topped fruit rip.

My mom made this easy sour cream fruit dip when I was growing up, especially during strawberry season. I had completely forgotten about it until I stumbled across the old recipe in my archives and decided it was too good and too simple not to bring back. It's old-school in the best way: simple, fresh, and all about letting fresh fruit shine.

    Ingredients You'll Need

Ingredients in prep bowls for a sour cream, honey, and vanilla fruit dip.
    • Sour cream - Use full-fat sour cream for the best flavor and creamy texture, or low-fat if preferred. Options below.
    • Honey - Use real honey, or a zero-sugar honey substitute for no added sugar. Maple syrup works too with just a little flavor difference.
    • Vanilla - Vanilla extract works perfectly, or use vanilla bean paste if you like visible vanilla bean flecks.
    • Brown sugar, optional - Serve on the side for dipping strawberries after the sour cream dip. Golden monk fruit or coconut sugar work too.
    • Fruit for serving - Strawberries are classic, melon, grapes, apple slices, pear slices, pineapple, berries, orange segments, cherries, or fruit skewers work as well.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Greek yogurt fruit dip- For a tangier, higher-protein dip, swap part or all of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. Icelandic yogurt, or Skyr, also works.
    • Add citrus - Add a little orange zest or lemon zest for a brighter flavor.
    • Make it dairy-free - Use a good vegan sour cream in place of dairy sour cream.
    • Use crème fraîche - For a richer dip, use crème fraîche (French sour cream) in. It's thick, creamy, and has a softer tang.
    • Fall fruit dip - Swap the honey for maple syrup and add a pinch of cinnamon. Serve with apple slices, pear slices, grapes, and figs for an easy fall fruit platter.

How to Make Fruit Dip in 5 Minutes

Add the sour cream, honey, and vanilla to a bowl and stir until smooth. Taste and adjust the honey if you prefer it sweeter. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

    Serving Suggestions

Serve with strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes, apple slices, pineapple, blackberries, or fruit skewers. For the old-school version, dip strawberries into the sour cream fruit dip, then lightly into brown sugar. That gives a bit more sweetness and a nice crunch.

Strawberry tip - When washing strawberries, leave the green tops on and use them as handles for dipping. If the tops are missing or not sturdy, serve the berries with toothpicks.

    Make Ahead & Storage

Make this sour cream fruit dip a few hours ahead or up to 1 day ahead and refrigerate until serving. Stir before serving if needed.

Fruit dip lasts 3-4 days ahead of time and refrigerated in an airtight container.

    Instructions

    • Combine the sour cream, vanilla and honey in a small bowl and whisk or stir together until smooth and creamy. Serve with fresh fruit as a dip.
For added sweetness and crunch, offer a small bowl of brown sugar to sprinkle on berries or dip into after the sour cream.

    Notes

    • Use Greek yogurt - For a tangier, higher-protein dip, swap part or all of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. Icelandic yogurt, or Skyr, is also great.
    • Add citrus - Add a little orange zest or lemon zest for a brighter flavor.
    • Make it dairy-free - Use a good vegan sour cream in place of dairy sour cream. Choose one with a clean, tangy flavor, since the dip is so simple.
    • Use crème fraîche - For a richer, slightly more elegant dip, use crème fraîche (French sour cream) in place of sour cream. It's thicker, creamier, and has a softer tang.
